Early hinges were used mainly on grand entrance doors and may either have been large straps or simple pins in the door that were just set into holes in the ground and door frame.
Nowadays hinges are made to certain high specifications to be graded for duty of service and fire resistance. Often ball bearing or ball race hinges are used on modern fire doors because of their easy action and longevity of use, and above all they have been FIRE CERTIFIED
Our old style Blacksmith tee and H hinges are still made by hand to traditional Kent patterns, in a manner that predates the industrial revolution, when the Weald of Kent was one of the foremost iron making areas in England.
